MIW Water Cooler Experts Proud To Be Part of the Cardiff and Vale College Legacy

Residents of Cardiff are about to gain a stunning new architectural highlight in their city centre as the Cardiff and Vale College (CAVC) opens just south of the central station this summer. The £45 million campus is a state of the art marvel, constructed in line with environmentally friendly principles and accessible to people of all abilities.

The wedge shaped structure, already drawing accolades for its design, will be the home for educational and trades training facilities, as well as including a lovely rooftop restaurant, a full service spa, student operated beauty salons, a gym, shops and even a conference centre.

This has been the largest construction project in Cardiff over the past few years, and residents are excited for the campus to open, as facilities will be open to the public seven days per week. The new CAVC campus is set in a brownfield (former industrial site) just off of Dumballs Road, located in the ‘financial enterprise zone’ along with other innovative businesses and corporations.

Spearheading the construction work has been Wilmott Dixon’s Wales division, a privately owned contracting, residential development and property support company known for their good works in the UK for over 160 years (in fact, Group chief executive Rick Willmott is the fifth generation to head the company). They are widely cited as one of the most sustainable and innovative construction firms in the UK, and they were present, along with a who’s who of Welsh ministers, to cut the turf and officially open the project in October of 2013.

Now that the construction phase is drawing to a close, finishing touches and décor are being added to the campus to ensure that it is fully operational in time for its grand opening. Featuring a modern, timeless interior design and state of the art technology, students and members of the public alike will have access to an important resource in their community.

MIW Water Cooler Experts were proud to win the contract to supply this building with 13 recessed Halsey Taylor drinking fountains, installed around the campus in order to provide everyone with access to fresh, clean, cool water. Not only is this drinking fountain model widely known as being energy efficient, spill free and low maintenance, it features a sturdy bottle filler so that students, faculty and Cardiff residents can quickly fill their own portable bottles.

Like all of the other details of the new city centre CAVC campus, these drinking fountains were carefully chosen because of their low impact on the environment. In fact, they have been assessed by BREEAM, the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings, as “excellent” – the highest rating that they award. Accessibility is another important concern on any college campus, and that is why these drinking fountains comply with the DDA and Equality Act 2010, ensuring that they are suitable for use by those less able-bodied.
